Senate Approves Energy Bill, $7,500 Tax Credit For Chevy Volt Buyers

Yesterday, the United States Senate passed a new bill that will provide tax credits for plug-in electric vehicles, allowing GM to successfully achieve their goal of obtaining a $7,500 tax credit for Chevy Volt buyers. According to the new piece of legislation, tax credits for plug-in buyers will start at $2,500 and extend all the up to $7,500 for light-duty vehicle - with Volt buyers being eligible for the maximum allowance. Unlike the tax credits already established for alternative energy/gasoline electric vehicles which orders the credits be phased out for customers of a company once that company sells more than 60,000 qualifying vehicles, credits for plug-in electric buyers won’t be phased out until sales total 250,000.

Although no official comment has been made by the Senate on the matter, Toyota has voiced strong objections to previous editions of the bill. Without specifically naming the Chevy Volt, Toyota suggested that the legislation would unfairly benefit only the customers of one particular plug-in hybrid vehicle. The new bill may have rectified the situation, but Senate has refrained from speaking on the matter. [Source: AutoNews.com]

Toyotacamryhybrid

Toyota is looking to boost its global sales of hybrids to 430,000 in 2007 from an already impressive 312,500 in 2006. This boost will include a 40% increase in Prius production in Japan, bringing total Prius numbers to 280,000 units. In two weeks, Toyota will unveil the new 2008 Highlander Hybrid, which will join the Camry Hybrid, Prius and Lexus hybrids like the LS 600h L, RX 400h and GS 450h in the company’s green portfolio.

Indiana Cressida Proves That A Snowball Has A Chance In Hell After All [Down On The Street Bonus Edition]

This is Down On The Street Bonus Edition, where we check out interesting street-parked cars located in places other than the Island That Rust Forgot. You know those movies about the scattered survivors of a heinous plague? Here's a machine that's emerged victorious- though hardly unscathed- from repeated assaults by the dreaded Yersina Rustis. 72Riv spotted this Cressida in Winona Lake, Indiana, a region in which most Malaise Era Japanese cars dissolved like a serial killer's victims in a basement quicklime pit- not that I'd know anything about that- and shot some nice photos and video for us. Jump away for more.

Today I ran across this old, first gen Toyota Cressida (circa '77-'80). I thought it would fit the DOTS Bonus Edition.
I took some photos and some video of it

I always find the old pre '80s Japanese steel to be interesting. They were still feeling out the American auto market and seemed to be going down the econo-Mercedes track rather than the sub-compact track at first.

Found in Winona Lake, Indiana.

An interesting tidbit—it has an Explorer (as in Explorer Conversion Vans—based in Warsaw, Indiana) logo on the right rear fender. I'm not sure why that is there. Perhaps it was put there by an employee that owned this car at some point.
Looks like it has been an Indiana resident for quite some time. It is showing the rust that the salty winters bring around here.
