GM Recalls the 2009 HUMMER H3T to Prevent the Fuel Tank from Falling Off

2009_hummer_h3t_fuel.jpg
GM is recalling 1,738 2009 HUMMER H3T models to fix an issue with the fuel tank.

The front support strap that holds the fuel tank in place could fracture, which would mean that the tank would only be supported by the rear strap and the stone shield. If left in this condition the rear strap and stone shield could also break causing the fuel tank could fall off the truck.

Dealers have been instructed to install a new-design fuel tank front support strap, free of charge.

Senate Approves Energy Bill, $7,500 Tax Credit For Chevy Volt Buyers

Yesterday, the United States Senate passed a new bill that will provide tax credits for plug-in electric vehicles, allowing GM to successfully achieve their goal of obtaining a $7,500 tax credit for Chevy Volt buyers. According to the new piece of legislation, tax credits for plug-in buyers will start at $2,500 and extend all the up to $7,500 for light-duty vehicle - with Volt buyers being eligible for the maximum allowance. Unlike the tax credits already established for alternative energy/gasoline electric vehicles which orders the credits be phased out for customers of a company once that company sells more than 60,000 qualifying vehicles, credits for plug-in electric buyers won’t be phased out until sales total 250,000.

Although no official comment has been made by the Senate on the matter, Toyota has voiced strong objections to previous editions of the bill. Without specifically naming the Chevy Volt, Toyota suggested that the legislation would unfairly benefit only the customers of one particular plug-in hybrid vehicle. The new bill may have rectified the situation, but Senate has refrained from speaking on the matter. [Source: AutoNews.com]

Truck Sales Hit Record Highs In August, But O, How This Spring Of Love Resembleth The Uncertain Glory of An April Day

Today, Auto News reported that the total overall sales of pickup trucks reached record numbers in August 2008, the highest they’ve been this year. To further add to our giddiness, it appears as though the buzzards have begun circling over a new malnourished desert wanderer: the compact car. In May, full-size pick-up sales accounted for 9.1% of industry sales while small cars accounted for 29.0%. In August, those figures shifted from from 9.1% to 13.2% and from 29.0% to 22.5%, respectively.

The surge in truck sales is somewhat attributed to the cost of fuel, which held at a steady $3.50 for most of last month, but industry analysts suggest that ridiculously attractive incentives played a larger role since many auto manufacturers offered practically everything including their first born to any prospective buyers.

Although the Chevrolet Silverado lead the troops in the small victory over the compact car, GM isn’t celebrating - yet. Explained Mark LaNeve, GM’s vice president of sales and marketing, “At some point, gang, the market bottoms. Nobody knows when the hell it is…I’d like to think it was June and July, and we’re starting to crawl our way out of this thing.” Like GM, Ford and Toyota are indulging in a guarded optimism, and are still left to deal with the financial ramifications of offering drastic incentives to buyers. Although GM isn’t anticipating much of a loss due to the mediocre success of their employee pricing gambit, executives at Ford are bracing for the backlash from their Big Bob’s Flea Market style of clearing the lot. After completely revised production plans stopped just short of sending the entire Ford large-vehicle lineup to the proverbial glue factory, Ford began offering an average of $9,000 cash back on all F-series pick-ups. Although we are certainly rallying for the Ford we’ve come to know and love, we can’t help but shake our heads winsomely and lament how poor are they that have not patience.

Brand new 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT on sale, just $35k!

Click above for a gallery of the 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT that time forgot

So you're a Pontiac diehard, but you don't need the space of the G8 GT GXP and the Solstice GXP is just a bit too "me too." So what's a Big Chief enthusiast to do? Well, if you've got $35,000 kicking around in your automotive slush fund, how about a brand-new, never-titled 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT? The mid-engined, V6 Fiero that General Motors should have been building the whole time, but only got around to developing just before they sent they took the plastic-bodied model out back? Yes, that GT.

Evidently thinking ahead, some enterprising chap found a fire-engine red example and promptly mothballed it. Quite likely the only "brand new" Fiero on the planet (GT or otherwise), this time warp rear-driver has just 221 miles on it, and is still on MSO. Heck, we're willing to bet that the cassette player has never even seen a copy of White Snake's Greatest Hits!

If you're interested, the optimistically-priced but irreplacable Fiero can be found at Hinton Chevrolet-Buick in Lynden, Washington. Thanks for the tip, Farris!

GM Delays Volt, Cruze Engine Plant Due To Carpocalypse [Chevy Volt]

GM's announced due to the Carpocalypse, it will halt construction on the new 552,000 square foot Flint Engine Plant responsible for the 1.4-liter inline four destined for the Chevy Volt and Chevy Cruze.

Back in September GM announced it would construct an all-new plant in Flint, Michigan to produce the 1.4 liter direct injection inline four cylinder engine planned to act as a generator in the Chevy Volt and main power in the Chevy Cruze.

GM Spokeswoman Sharon Basel would not say when construction might resume if government loans are made available, but asserted there is time in both programs to accommodate the delay, and GM currently builds the engine in Austria, so they "...have lots of options. The construction of the new plant is not going to interrupt our plans for the Volt or Cruze."

Due to a tightening cash situation GM is immediately halting construction of the plant in an effort to stay afloat over the sea of bankruptcy. A delay in the production timing for both the Cruze and Volt so far have not been similarly delayed. Construction will resume as soon as GM is in a cash position which will allow them to buy important stuff like girders and concrete. [MSNBC]

Congressman Urges Automaker CEOs To "Jetpool" When Heading To DC Begging For Money [Financiapocalypse]

New York Congressman Gary Ackerman feasts upon a buffet of "delicious irony" as he asks the CEOs from the Not-So-Big Three to perhaps save some cash and fuel by using a single jet together rather than individual private jets from Detroit to D.C. to beg for bailout dollars from the Feds. We even hear Reagan National's got a diamond-festooned runway set up just for jetpoolers. [CNN]

GM cutting production by 250,000 vehicles in Q1

General Motors has just announced it will cut vehicle production in the first quarter of 2009 by 250,000 units. The slowdown in production will reportedly affect some 21 factories in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, which may see their traditional shut-down period over the holidays extended through the end of January, and in some cases into February. This means that most GM factories in North America will sit idle for nearly a third of Q1 2009. GM has not specified which plants will be affected and how, but some workers were already notified this morning of the extended shut down period. We expect a press release from the General later today with more specifics, so stay tuned.

UPDATE: Follow the jump for official press release from GM detailing exactly which plants in the U.S., Canada and Mexico will be affected.

Mainstream Media Finds Major 'Merican Automaker On YouTube [Save GM]

The internet reporter for CNN's "The Situation Room" used her fancy touchscreen computer to highlight how GM has transformed its YouTube channel page from a place where it brags, into a place where, increasingly, it begs. Last year around this time there was video of people doing slam poetry about the Pontiac Vibe GT, but now, as we showed you earlier, it's all videos of guys in suits trying to explain why they deserve money from the government. We're not sure what's more depressing: the new Save GM videos or the fact it took the novelty of their use of YouTube to get CNN to finally show them. We're just waiting for video of a crying, sheet-covered Rick Wagoner screaming "Leave Detroit Alone!" into the camera. [CNN]

Can the new GM Yukon/Tahoe Hybrid really match the Camry in fuel efficiency?

When GM first announced their efforts of producing a hybrid system for their Troop Carrier class SUV’s the Chevy Tahoe and the GMC Yukon their estimates were for a modest 25 percent gain in fuel economy. After more testing it seems their modest estimates were too modest and that the real fuel savings has leapt to 50 percent. That would mean that this road behemoth would average around 21 mpg in the city; which is right there with the Camry.  …Not so behemoth like.

The complete EPA rating for the Tahoe/Yukon Hybrid will be 21 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway. Those may not be the same average leaps found from other hybrid models, but when you consider the gasoline variant of those SUV’s gets 10 mpg in the city that is a colossal improvement. (more…)

Beijing to be last Olympics for GM

Auto makers must really be feely the strain these days, for GM will no longer be sponsoring the US Olympic team after next years event in Beijing, China.

Obviously there will be many reasons for this, but today’s auto makers need to be focused and in tune with what is going locally in order to survive, we have seen this with Ford, they continue to try and release the burden of owning foreign car makes.

Beijing to be last Olympics for GM

Spending around $1 billion on the Olympic team, does seen to be a little excessive, granted the investment is going to be worthwhile in a moving market like China, but when the 2012 Olympics goes to London, then would GM have anything to gain from this deal? It is doubtful.

Beijing to be last Olympics for GM
Sponsorship can mean different things to different people, consumers may see that by sponsoring the US Olympic team as being patriotic, and therefore feel that the brand is good, whereas on the other hand there are many small teams and fringe sports that are in the USA who could also benefit from sponsorship, this would also look good, because the money would be staying in the US and going to good causes.

There is a tight rope that large companies need to tread when it comes to sponsorship, as there is going to always be organizations looking for money, it is a matter of choosing the right ones at the right times.

Asset Sale of General Motors gets a go from Bankruptcy Court

Last weekend, a bankruptcy court judge gives a nod for the sale of assets for the most valuable assets of GM to end bankruptcy protection from the ownership of the government.GM Flag This means that the car manufacturer is a step closer from getting out of bankruptcy.

Robert Gerber, the judge who ruled on the case, described it as a necessary step to prevent the death of a critically ill patient. The court has given a stay of four days which permits a close as early as July 10.

The sale will transfer in essence all of the properties of General Motors to the NGMCO Inc. which was established by the Department of Treasury. NGMCO will be known as General Motors Company once the sale is completed and will operate through the corporate GM and all of its sub brands.

Fritz Henderson will be the CEO of the newly established GM. The cost of operations will also be competitive in terms of its structure with standing agreements with the UAW and CAW, organizations of Auto Workers in United States and Canada, respectively.

The new status of GM will allow it to operate and gain profits at lower volume of productions. GM attributes this foresight to the cleaner debt sheet and better balance sheet post bankruptcy.

Daewoo, Holder, and other subsidiaries of GM outside the of U.S. will be acquired by the new GM but continue to operate without any interruption.

The Department of Treasury will be owning about 60.8% of the new company while 17.5% goes to UAW, and 11.7% to the Ontario government and CAW. Bond holders of the old GM will be getting 10% of the stake.
