The Red Bull Soapbox Race Comes to Philadelphia

Every year, a bunch of awesome weirdos get together and construct bizarre, non-motorized soapbox carts to compete in high speed, downhill battle. It’s called the Red Bull Soapbox Race, and this year it finally comes to my hometown of Philadelphia.

The rules aren’t just about speed though, and that’s key. Teams will be judged on three criteria: speed, creativity and showmanship. All the soapboxes have to be human powered, meaning no engines or any kind of electricity or outside power. They have to be purpose built for the race too, no pre-fab carts allowed.

This is my kind of event and these are my kind of people. Everyone gets dressed up, even the people that just come to watch; they build carts with all sorts of lunatic themes and extravagant strangeness. It’s mayhem, like a less freaky mini Burning Man. And it’s all free, even entering the race.

So it should be pure awesome. More than 40 teams with up to 4 members each have already signed up, plus there will be a huge turnout of people there to watch. On September 6, Lyceum Avenue in Manayunk, also known as “The Manayunk Wall”, will be round zero of a party of epic proportions.
