End Of BMW Z4 Signals Job Cuts In South Carolina

Adding further to the misery of the American workforce, it appears that the end of the current production BMW Z4 is also going to mean the beginning of job cuts in the South Carolina plant that produces it. Even after BMW announced in March that it was proceeding with a $750 million expansion and production increase from 165,000 to 240,000 vehicles by 2012, the Greenville News reported today that BMW will make cuts to the 5,900 workforce at its Spartanburg County plant.  As many as 700 people had worked on the Z4, though BMW is tighlipped about exactly how many will be let go following this announcement. The plant also produces the X5 sports activity vehicle and the X6 sports activity coupe. Though not any immediate consolation for those that may lose their jobs, it is hoped that those job loses will be offset if BMW keeps to their plan to add production of a diesel X5 before year’s end and a hybrid X6 next year.  Also on a positive note, the company expects to shift production of the X3, a smaller version of the X5, to America from Austria in 2010.

In more cheery related news, the slightly larger replacement of the Z4 has been spotted during testing in Germany, including at the famed Nürburgring.  Even in camoflauge, the new car appears to be a mere freshening up (or toned down to some) of the long-hooded short-decked sports car.  In addition to the standard convertible there are rumors of new twin turbocharged and hardtop convertible versions in the pipline as well.  At the very least, BMW’s new six-cylinder engines are sure to find their way under the hood to produce roughly the same horsepower as previous models.  Reportedly, the BMW Z4 will have three different choices of engines for 2009, a 2.0-liter direct-injection engine with an output of 185 hp, a direct-injection 2.5-liter Inline-6 engine that produces 231 hp and a Turbocharged 3.0-liter direct-injection engine that is rated at 321 hp.  Additionally, an even more powerful high-revving normally aspirated 4.0-liter V8 engine that cranks out 450 hp and is electronically limited to 155 mph may be forthcoming as well.  With this engine, the Z4 replacement is supposedly capable of 0 to 60 mph times of less than 6 seconds.

BMW uses 2010 Z4 as art car (of sorts)

Normally the models in BMW's art car line -- sixteen and counting -- get their body panels splashed up with designs by the who's who of the art world. BMW has decided to switch up the concept for a commercial for the new Z4; instead of the car being the canvas, the Z4 paints a canvas. Guided by modern artist Robin Rhode and a team of technicians, the Z4 is rigged up with machines that spray paint from the wheels, with everything captured on film by director Jake Scott, Ridley's son. The tire prints in all kinds of hues are laid down on an enormous white canvas, and the result is called "An Expression of Joy." You can check out the press release after the jump, the high-res gallery of images below, and Wallpaper magazine has behind the scenes video. If you like what you see, you might even be able to buy a slice of it in due time.

Top Gear puts the 2008 BMW M3, Mercedes C 63 AMG and Audi RS4 Head-to-Head-to-Head

Top Gear: 2008 BMW M3, Mercedes C 63 AMG and Audi RS4

Never content to just ride and report on cars the fellas at Top Gear literally put their cars through the ringer and never hold back with their thoughts and opinion. That is what makes it one of the most popular and entertaining Auto Shows on the boob-tube. In one of their recent episodes they wrangled up a new 2008 BMW M3 and matched up its 414-hp 4.0 Liter V8 against the Mercedes C 63 AMG with its larger 6.2 Liter V8 pumping out 451-hp and pitted them both against (3 hosts,  you need 3 cars) the Audi RS4 with its 4.2 Liter V8 Quattro at 420-hp.

Let’s see what the boys from Top Gear can do with these sport luxury vehicles. (more…)

The Future of BMW: 1 Series, Two New Crossovers for U.S.

Bmw1series

BMW has a new CEO and he isn’t shy about discussing future products. In the ultra-secretive world that is the automotive industry, we don’t get candid Q&A’s from executives too often, but AutoWeek scored a good one with new BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer. Reithofer used to head up BMW’s U.S. production in South Carolina, so he has a pulse on the American market.

What exactly did he say? Well, for one thing the U.S. will see future 1 Series models. The 1 Series is currently on sale in Europe as a hatchback (shown here). Reithofer says the U.S. will not get a hatchback, though; look for a 1 Series sedan, coupe and wagon instead. The 1 Series could be a huge hit in the U.S. as a successor to the classic BMW 2002.

The other news is that the South Carolina plant will add a new crossover vehicle in 2008 that will be built alongside the X5 SUV. Reithofer calls it a “so-called SAV coupe.” We don’t know what that means either, but the term SAV — Sport Activity Vehicle — is what they use for the X3.

A second crossover is in the works, but the CEO was much more vague about that. All he would say is that it won’t be a luxury minivan like the Mercedes-Benz R-Class.

It’s always fun to speculate about what will be on the roads in the future, and now we know a lot more than we did yesterday.
