VW Asks Chrysler to Stop Producing the Slow Selling Routan for a Month

2009_vw_routan_sales.jpg
Well it looks like VW's attempt at a badge engineered Chrysler minivan is not going over so well. According to The Windsor Star, Chrysler workers are going to stop building the Volkswagen Routan, which is based on the Chrysler Town & Country.

VW has asked Chrysler Canada to stop producing the Routan due to inventory build up for the month of February. Currently Chrysler has been producing 300 Routans a day with about 29,000 already shipped to dealerships.

VW has only managed to sell a few thousand Routans.

Detroit 2009: Jeep Patriot Extended-Range Vehicle appears in D-town [w/VIDEO]

Click above for a high-res gallery of the Jeep Patriot EV

So sayeth Chrysler and ENVI, Chrysler's electric vehicle partner, "the Jeep Patriot EV expands our portfolio of ENVI electric-drive vehicles and is just one more example of what is possible through the technology Chrysler is developing." With the same heart as the genuinely cool Chrysler 200C Concept, the capable and flexible range-extended engine gives the Patriot a 40-mile all electric range, a 400-mile total range, and an 8-second 0-to-60 jaunt.

The only question we have about this car is the same single question we have about all of the Chrysler-ENVI vehicles: um, when are we gonna see it? We're now six months into Chrysler's electric adventure, and all we have is a hoped-for date for the Circuit EV (showroom decoration in 2010). The Jeep and Caravan extended-range vehicles can't take that long, can they? Chrysler, we know you can do it. Give them to us. Soon. While the rest of you wait, you can read the press release after the jump and check out the gallery of high-res live photos below.

Chrysler supposedly in 'chaos', suppliers could demand COD

Filed under:

GM is getting the lion's share of the glaring national spotlight due to the immediacy of the company's cash crunch, but Chrysler's situation is easily just as dire. Employees at the Pentastar know this, as evidenced by the fact that a full 25% of its salaried workforce took voluntary separation packages to get while the getting is good. Those 5,000 people weren't just sitting around at Chrysler headquarters, though. They had responsibilities, and Automotive News and the Dow Jones News Service is reporting that chaos is settling in due to the personnel vacuum.

The report cites three sources with knowledge of Chrysler's supplier dealings as saying that suppliers are nervous about bankruptcy, and as a result may beginning to ask for cash on hand in return for parts. A Chrysler spokesperson called the 'chaos' term unwarranted, and said that the loss of jobs will help the company to "continue the transformation of our company." Mega-supplier Borg Warner, for one, told Automotive News that all of the Detroit automakers are currently paying their bills on time, and there have been no reports of Chrysler not paying any large suppliers.

What’s in a name?

Well it would seem quite a lot if the name happens to be Daimler! A name that has been associated with Jaguar since the early sixties, after Jaguar acquired the rights to use the name. During which time Daimler always represented the top of the range Jaguar model, in fact the Daimler XJ6 Vanden Plas, was the premier car to come out of the Jaguar factory in the series two days.

Daimler so what’s in a name?

However the name never appeared on any models that went stateside, for some reason, maybe because they found it hard enough in those days to sell the one car, let alone confusing things with various models too.

The problem is that Daimler Chrysler is a stand alone company, while Ford own Jaguar, also own the rights to use the name Daimler, which could result in some serious problems and confusion for consumers, if a Ford owned Jaguar came out with a Daimler badge and at the same time Daimler Chrysler were trying to sell a high end car, well its just crazy or is it?

Daimler so what’s in a name?

It would appear that the two auto giants have come to some sort of an arrangement, that will see both companies using the Daimler name, now as mentioned earlier is that not going to be confusing for people? Exactly what the arrangement is remains a secret for now, so we shall have to wait and see.

Chrysler Thinks About Next PT Cruiser

Pt_cruiser_1

What happens when you have to redesign retro? We asked the question earlier this year, and one expert said retro redesigns should maintain some retro styling cues while offering a fresh design for buyers. To some extent, Chrysler's 2006 PT Cruiser attempted to do that – but it was a mid-cycle update, and now it's high time for a redesign. As Chrysler considers its options for the next PT Cruiser, Automotive News reports the automaker may build the next car in conjunction with a small crossover car from Dodge.

It's not clear whether the next PT Cruiser will share components with the Dodge Caliber – or even retain the name PT Cruiser. One analyst expects the replacement car to be quite different, dropping much of the current car's retro flair, Automotive News reports.

The PT Cruiser is a strong seller, perhaps the reason Chrysler has delayed a redesign for so long. Leave a note below on what you'd like to see in the next PT – including a new name.
