Honda Recalls 81,000 Accords Over Airbag Sensor

NHTSA reports that Honda is recalling 81,000 2004 - 05 Accord sedans because of an airbag sensor that was installed improperly. The sensor regulates deployment of the airbag based on the occupant’s size and seating position and could fail, leading to injuries for smaller drivers.

Recall notices will reach owners in February, but the company says if the sensor does fail an airbag warning light will illuminate on the car’s dash. If owners see the airbag light go off, they should have their car serviced immediately. Under the recall, all owners will have the sensor wiring harness replaced. Honda says it’s received no notice of injury or incidents with the airbag deploying improperly.

The announcement comes days after 2006 recall tallies showed Honda had the fewest mechanical recalls of any automaker last year, with just more than 1,000 vehicles recalled. Toyota recalled more than 800,000 vehicles in 2006.

This is Honda’s solution and answer to Toyota’s recently launched Venza crossover, Honda will be preparing this new CUV that is based off of their always popular Accord. Not too much is known yet on the actual specs of this car, but for now enjoy the pictures and let us know what you think of the new design.

Honda has at least figured out the production problem.

Honda has teamed up with a Japanese research firm to develop a new way of producing ethanol fuel. Previously made from either corn or sugarcane, ethanol has been an increasing hot topic among automakers, environmentalists and politicians, but overall it is still costly to produce with little infrastructure in the United States.

Honda has at least figured out the production problem. Converting corn and sugarcane into ethanol yielded little fuel given the amount of raw material used, and it also saps food stocks. The new method uses inedible and discarded plant material and is vastly more efficient. Honda is planning to produce an ethanol-capable vehicle for the Brazilian market, but major U.S. automakers like Ford and General Motors already have hundreds of thousands of flex-fuel vehicles on the road now that can run on either ethanol or gasoline.   

Honda hasn’t been promoting its ethanol plans, and the company is better known for its gasoline hybrids. One Honda spokesman said ethanol could account for 30% of fuel in the U.S. by 2025. If this new process can be widely adopted, we’re ready to believe that number.
