Cheap wheels, Monterey style

valiant 1

There’s a story behind this photo. Let me explain. Associate Editor David La Chance and I had just left the Gooding and Company Auction preview last month in Pebble Beach, which was where I spotted this Slant Six-powered 1963 Plymouth Valiant convertible in the parking field, with its top down as chalky dust (and ash from the Lockheed wildfire) billowed around. It was late in the day and we were debating whether to head back over to Laguna Seca for the Monterey Historics. Dave was driving our Pontiac G6 rental when we were diverted through downtown Carmel. In traffic, we spotted the Valiant at the curb, wedged in behind a BMW wagon in front of some wildly expensive fashion boutique. For a largely original but otherwise unremarkable Plymouth compact, the seller was asking – honest – a firm 25 big ones. Bet he got it, too. That’s Monterey in August for you.

New York – On a Dry Day

Considering the weather we’ve had since the winter thaw, it’s amazing that Upstate New York and Northern New England have not been washed out into the Sound.  Of course, this has a direct effect on our already short shooting season.

So senior editor Jim Donnelly and I made the short trek into New York with great relief yesterday under perfectly sunny skies to photograph a 1970 Dodge Challenger RT/SE – after it had been postponed several times over the course of the last week or so.

JD in action (300 x 450)

As the early evening slowly slipped away to nightfall, I could not resist capturing Jim in the process of capturing a sunlit detail shot.
